(NYSE: MTZ) today announced that it has acquired Big Country Energy Services Inc., and its affiliated operating companies (collectively, "Big Country"), a North American oil and gas pipeline and facility construction services company headquartered in Calgary, Canada.     Over the last year, Energy XXI has been a dramatic underperformer. Production levels were missed. It drilled a couple of bad wells and oil prices subsided from their peaks of a year or two ago. On the other hand, gas prices have doubled over the last year which helps a little. Little income is derived from gas compared to the huge contribution to cash flow and earnings EXXI derives from being an “oily” company.

    The union representing workers at Northstar Aerospace in Lakeshore said Wednesday it was hopeful the two sides will reached a tentative agreement before the current contract expires Friday. “We’re very optimistic, said Fran LaSorda, second vice-president at CAW Local 444. “We are currently discussing monetary issues.”

    CALGARY – British Columbia’s shale gas fields stand to gain as buyers flee landlocked bitumen reserves in neighboring Alberta. Canada’s westernmost province is likely to see an uptick in “selective” merger and acquisition activity as global liquefied natural gas players seek reserves needed to backstop export developments, Greg Pardy, co-head of global energy research at RBC Dominion Securities Inc., said in May 22 report.
