CAW hopeful deal can be reached with Northstar Aerospace
The union representing workers at Northstar Aerospace in Lakeshore said Wednesday it was hopeful the two sides will reached a tentative agreement before the current contract expires Friday.“We’re very optimistic, said Fran LaSorda, second vice-president at CAW Local 444. “We are currently discussing monetary issues.”The negotiations affect 55 employees who earn on average about $26 an hour, said LaSorda.She said a strike authorization would not take place until mid-June to allow for conciliation if necessary.Northstar Aerospace produces machine precision products, primarily transmissions and engine components for the U.S. military, commercial and private aircraft, helicopters and light armoured vehicles, according to the CAW. Customers include, Rolls Royce, Boeing and General Electric.Last year, the company entered into bankruptcy protection, but has since staged a turnaround and added a third shift this year, said the union.
